Ford Performance Racing is on top of the V8 Supercar Championship Series team points after another podium in today’s third and final race in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Steve Richards finished the round second overall after securing a third podium place in race three, right on the heels of round winner Garth Tander.

“I’m absolutely rapped for the team,” said Richo, who drives the #6 Castrol FPR Falcon. “We’ve taken a big step forward in terms of our championship chase. We’ve survived a pretty fraught start to the year so that’s a great result and all the accolades should go to the crew.”

Pit strategy played a crucial part in Richo’s race today, with the Auckland-born driver emerging from the pit lane wheel to wheel with second-placed Courtney on lap 12. Richo won the ensuing drag race to take his third podium of the weekend just one second off Tander.

“We made a change for the last race and it definitely hurt the car a little bit,” said Richo. “Our race pace was as good as Garth’s in the late stages but early on the car was bouncing about on the bumps a little bit and I was struggling to keep up.

“We’re definitely getting on top of the little issues we’ve had and it’s getting better and better and I’m getting more and more confident.”

Mark Winterbottom's weekend ended on a high as the 26-year-old finished fifth in today's race despite having to fight his way back from last in yesterday's race.

“We had a bit of bad luck this weekend with the qualifying but we raced hard; that’s what you do!" said Frosty, who drives the #5 Orrcon Ford Credit FPR Falcon. "We’re now only 100 points off the drivers’ championship lead as opposed to 150 and Richo has jumped to sixth overall so, all in all, you can’t really complain too much."
