Ambrose scores ninth in Texas PDF Print E-mail

Marcos Ambrose has scored his fifth top 10 finish of the 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series with an impressive run to ninth place in the O’Reilly Challenge at Texas motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas today.

Ambrose was pleased with the pace of his #59 Kingsford Tailgate Ford Fusion, having placed eighth and 12th fastest in the two Nationwide Series practice sessions held at Texas.

But the Australian was not content with his qualifying performance, leading to a charge from 25th position on the grid in today’s 200-lap race. Ambrose quickly rose up into the top 15 and steadily made ground towards a top 10 position in the middle stages of the race, displaying some of the best speed the #59 Kingsford Ford Fusion has shown all season.

With 23 laps remaining and with Ambrose in 10th place, a caution period was called following a clash between Denny Hamlin and Juan Pablo Montoya, with the latter spinning into the infield.

The crew from JTG Daugherty Racing performed a slick pit stop during the caution, getting Ambrose back out on track in ninth position for the final run to the flag.

The Australian driver did not let his crew’s hard work go to waste, comfortably maintaining his position to score a valuable haul of points as Ambrose looks to finish in the top 10 in Nationwide Series points for the second-consecutive season.

Only two races remain in the 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series, making today’s result crucial for Ambrose, who now lies just eighth points behind ninth placed Jason Leffler and 116 points ahead of 11th placed David Stremme.

Today’s top 10 follows earlier top 10 finishes in Mexico City, Kentucky, Montreal and Watkins Glen this season. It also gives Ambrose 16 top 15 finishes in the last 22 Nationwide Series races.

Kyle Busch won today’s O’Reilly Challenge ahead of Carl Edwards and Mark Martin, while sixth placed Clint Bowyer continues to lead the Nationwide Series driver’s standings.

Tomorrow Ambrose will start from 24th place in the Dickies 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in Texas, behind the wheel of the #47 Little Debbie Toyota Camry of Michael Waltrip Racing.

It will be the ninth Sprint Cup start for Ambrose and his first at the fast 1.5-mile speedway in Fort Worth, Texas.

Earlier today Ambrose was 28th and 32nd fastest in the two Sprint Cup practice sessions held ahead of tomorrow’s 500-mile event.

QUOTES - MARCOS AMBROSE

“It was a good day for us,” said Ambrose.

“We fought all day. We had a fast car in practice. I did a bad job in qualifying, so we had to come back through the field.

“We did well but we just ran out of laps. The car was at its best the last 30 or 40 laps of the race. The track was coming to us and the car was coming to us.

“I’m so happy with the result. It just cements us in the top-10 in points. I feel like it’s been a good day for us. We can use this car again now because it’s pretty straight. We’re in good shape.”
